Nitrile vs Latex Gloves: Which is Right for You?

Nitrile vs Latex Gloves: Which is Right for You?

When it comes to disposable gloves, two materials dominate the market: nitrile and latex. Both offer protection, but they have very different properties that make each better suited to specific applications. Here's everything you need to know to make the right choice.

What Are Latex Gloves?

Latex gloves are made from natural rubber and have been the industry standard for decades. They offer excellent elasticity, a comfortable fit, and strong tactile sensitivity — making them popular in medical and dental settings.

Pros of latex gloves:

  • Superior fit and flexibility
  • Excellent tactile sensitivity
  • Biodegradable and eco-friendlier
  • Generally lower cost

Cons of latex gloves:

  • Can cause allergic reactions (latex allergy affects up to 6% of the general population)
  • Not suitable for use with certain chemicals or oils
  • Increasingly restricted in healthcare settings due to allergy concerns

What Are Nitrile Gloves?

Nitrile gloves are made from a synthetic rubber compound. Originally developed as a latex-free alternative, they have become the preferred choice across medical, industrial, and food-handling industries worldwide.

Pros of nitrile gloves:

  • Latex-free — safe for people with latex allergies
  • Superior puncture and chemical resistance
  • Excellent durability — typically 3–5x more puncture-resistant than latex
  • Resistant to oils, fuels, and many solvents
  • Available in a range of colours for colour-coding in food and medical environments

Cons of nitrile gloves:

  • Slightly less elastic than latex (though modern nitrile has improved significantly)
  • Traditionally higher cost, though bulk buying reduces this significantly

Which Glove Should You Choose?

Here's a quick guide by industry:

  • Medical & Healthcare: Nitrile is now the gold standard due to latex allergy concerns and superior puncture resistance.
  • Food Handling: Nitrile (blue or black) is ideal — easy to spot contamination and latex-free.
  • Industrial & Manufacturing: Nitrile wins hands down for chemical and puncture resistance.
  • Dental: Both are used, but nitrile is increasingly preferred.
  • General Purpose / Light Tasks: Either works, though nitrile offers better protection.

Why Nitrile is the Clear Winner for Most Applications

With latex allergies on the rise and nitrile technology improving rapidly, nitrile gloves have become the go-to choice for most Australian businesses. They offer better protection, are safer for all users, and when purchased in bulk cartons, are extremely cost-effective.

At Valiant Australia, we stock premium nitrile gloves in bulk cartons — perfect for medical, industrial, and food-handling use. Browse our range of nitrile gloves and get fast delivery across Australia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are nitrile gloves safe for food handling?

Yes. Nitrile gloves are widely used in food handling and are latex-free, making them safe for all staff and customers.

Can I use nitrile gloves for chemical handling?

Nitrile gloves offer good resistance to many chemicals, oils, and fuels. Always check the specific chemical resistance rating for your application.

Are nitrile gloves more expensive than latex?

Nitrile gloves can cost slightly more per glove, but buying in bulk cartons significantly reduces the per-unit cost. Valiant Australia offers competitive bulk pricing.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
